Karate is a seen as an art, a self-defence technique or as a combat sport. But most individuals who possess in-depth learning see it rather as a form of art than a self-defence technique. So most people who learned karate in the early days swore to learn karate only as a form of art. They shall not use it for personal gain or threaten someone.
Karate has three levels which are, Fundamentals, Forms, and Sparring. Karate is predominantly a striking art it uses punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear hands, and palm heel strikes. Modern karate also involves grappling, throws, joint locks restraints, and vital point strikes. The ranking level of every individual who is attempting to master the art is recognized by the color of the belt he or she holds. The color of the belt changes as the candidate goes a level ahead.
History of Karate:
Karate is a Japanese art that was developed under the influence of Chinese martial arts sometime around late 1890’s. In 1924 the first major club for karate was opened in a Japanese university that systematically taught the martial art. After that, all major universities included karate as a part of their extra curriculum. Japanese military is known for its strength. So during the years of war, they wanted to keep the power of the nation and military at par. It was at that time, karate became an influential martial artist in the Japanese military bases and gradually reached the common public. Many movies which came during the years between 1960 to 1970 focussed on these martial arts and helped them gain popularity. Since then a lot of centers that taught karate emerged across the world and got the attention of public catering to both people looking for casual learning and people who wanted to master the art.
Words of Wisdom:
“Form is emptiness, emptiness is formed itself” is how the art is described by the Japanese martial are veteran Funakoshi, and he also stated that the word “kara” which means ‘to do’ actually indicates that the learner should stay away from evil and selfish thoughts. Only with clear mind and conscience, a practitioner can understand the knowledge he receives, in its purest form.
